AGRICULTURAL FAIR

 

St. Patrick School on St. Croix participated in the Agricultural Fair on February 16-18. This year's school theme was "Coconuts and Things." The students showcased the crafts they made from coconuts shells.

 

PRE-MED STUDENT  

Hannah Charles, an 11th grader at Ss. Peter and Paul School on St. Thomas, was the sole Virgin Islander nominated to attend a National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine this summer. She was selected through the Student Search Service of the College Board based upon her academic excellence, leadership potential and interest in a career in medicine. The ten-day program in pre-medical education for high school students, held in nine cities in the United States, utilizes a hands-on, interactive curriculum that includes clinical and research visits.

Hannah Charles was also the winner of Schneider Regional Medical Center's 2008 Youth Essay contest. She is pictured above with Amos Carty, Esq, CEO of the medical center, as she prepared to read her essay at the center's fourth annual Balm in Gilead program, The Black Church Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS, on March 2.

 

TEACHERS WORKSHOP  

St. Joseph High School on St. Croix presented a second CRISS Teacher Workshop in the school library on March 7. Project CRISS is a professional development course designed to help teachers incorporate learning strategies for reading, writing and learning into their regular content instruction. CRISS is the acronym for Creating Independence through Student-owned Strategies. Pictured above, Br. James Petrait, OSFS, a science teacher, summarized his focus group's conclusions.

 

LADY JAGUARS: GIRLS' VARSITY SOFTBALL

Ss. Peter and Paul School's varsity softball team, the Lady Jaguars, won both its games so far this season, beating All Saints School in a 9-6 win at the Joseph Aubain Ballpark on March 19 and defeating Charlotte Amalie High School in an 8-2 win at the Joseph Aubain Ballpark on March 26.

Pitcher Tredesha Pierre led the team to a 7-3 record last year while earning the honor of starting pitcher in the all-star game. She struck out 11 batters in the game opener this season and struck oout 12 batters in the second game.

The team has four games in April:

Wednesday, April 2, at 5:45 p.m. against Ivanna Eudora Kean High School at the Joseph Aubain Ballpark;

Monday, April 7, at 4:00 p.m. against All Saints School at the Smith Bay Field;

Tuesday, April 15, at 4:00 p.m. against Ivanna Eudora Kean High School at McBean Field;

Wednesday, April 16, at 5:45 p.m. against Antilles School at the Joseph Aubain Ballpark.
