SUMMER ATHLETIC CAMP IS OPEN FOR CHILDREN WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES

Camp Shriver St. Thomas, sponsored by Catholic Charities of the Virgin Islands (CCVI), will give as many as 25 campers with intellectual disabilities and an equal number of buddies (without intellectual disabilities) the opportunity to discover the joy of victory and the agony of defeat by participating in an athletic sports camp for two weeks, July 23 to August 3.

The camp, an initiative of First Lady Cecile deJongh, will be held at the Marin Center at Antilles School. Campers will explore their capabilities in kick ball, soft ball, swimming, volley ball and physical fitness. The camp will permit these youngsters to realize their potential, develop physical fitness and experience the friendships that come from camp.

Michael Akin, Executive Director of CCVI, Lorenzo Donastorg and Therese Hodge, Camp Shriver sport directors, participated in a training program at the Maryland home of Eunice Kennedy Shriver in May. Mrs. Shriver hosted the first Camp Shriver at her home in 1962, believing that people with intellectual disabilities are far more capable than is commonly believed and are deserving of the same opportunities as others.

Adult volunteers are needed for the camp. Call CCVI to register.
